Second Hand Seniors

Where Imperfect Is Perfect

ADOPT  A SENIOR SHELTER DOG

One by One, they pass by my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can't run and play.
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way

A little old man, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.

Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.

Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted and driven away.

When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the grey, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond this cage.

You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly, you want me to know.

I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give,
To you, my dear person, as long as I live.

I may be with you for a week, or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.

And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear

Second Hand Seniors rescues senior dogs of all breeds from area shelters which would otherwise be euthanized.

Sally and Angel' Story:

Angel and Sally were turned into a public shelter and quickly ended up on the euthanasia list when their owner passed away. This dynamic duo has been together since they were 12 weeks old. They are now 12 years old. Sally has a pin in her leg. She is amazing. She learns very quickly how to compensate for her disability and doesn't let her bum leg hold her back. Angel is all smiles even though she isblind and has a heart condition. These sweet seniors believe in living life to it's fullest and are total joys. They never have to worry about being seperated again. Second Hand Seniors provides second chances to shelter seniors like Angel and Sally. Very few rescues accept senior shelter dogs.

In Memory:

We were notified by the shelter that Thurman's kennel cough was progressing. Since the shelter has no vet and no access to life saving antibiotics, we issued a rescue pull on Thurman and sent transport the same day. According to the shelter, "This good ole boy was found wandering the city in search of a comfortable home to call his very own. He is a sweet older boy who reminds us of a grandpa always looking to comfort anyone he can. he gets along very well with the other dogs. He knows he is a bit older then most people want but he also knows he has a lot of love to give if someone will give him a chance."We agree with their assessment of Thurman. He was everything good in a senior dog but we did not get to him in time. He passed away Monday January 25, 2010 from pnemonia. He was at the vet's office relaxing in the oxygen chamber when he drifted across the rainbow bridge. Thurman was one of those wonderful dogs who could make a lasting impression and had the ability to leave his old senior paw prints on the hearts of those who shared his final days with him. So, was it worth the effort? Ask anyone who shared Thurman's last few days. He knew someone had come for him. He didn't die alone in a shelter on a cold concrete floor. Yes, Thurman was worth our best efforts. Rest easy big boy, until we meet again.
